Chasing the Crescent Moon began in late 2006 as a collaboration between Aaron Schwartz of Swarthmore College and Marty Goldensohn, a veteran NPR producer and the former leader of Swarthmore’s War News Radio. The goal was to plan and produce an hour-long radio documentary on a pressing international health issue. It wasn’t long until word of Dr. Kwaku Ohene-Frempong’s international sickle cell efforts came to their attention and contact with Dr. Frempong was made.  Dr. Frempong then invited Aaron to accompany him Ghana over the summer of 2007 to interview physicians, nurses, sickle cell patients and their families. The six-week trip was made possible by a generous grant from Swarthmore College.  Over 30 hours of tape were collected in Ghana and Philadelphia.  With Marty’s oversight and the editorial assistance of several War News Radio reporters, Aaron wrote and produced Chasing the Crescent Moon.  Distribution of the piece began in the summer of 2008, electonically through the Public Radio Exchange (PRX), and by CD mailing, all with the help of the marketing firm, Creative PR.
